Bio
Professor Dr. Ioan Mircea Pascu MEP is currently Vice President of the European Parliament, Vice Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and S&D Coordinator for Security and Defense. From 2005-07, he was Observer in the European Parliament and since 2007 MEP and Vice Chair AFET, working on CFSP/CSDP matters, including as Rapporteur for the EU’s mutual defense and security clauses and the strategic situation in the Black Sea. Parliamentary research is one of his responsibilities as Vice President of the EP.
From 1990, he has held high political and public office positions, including Presidential Advisor on Foreign Policy (1990-1992), State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense (1993-1996), Chairman of the Defense Committee in the Chamber of Deputies (1996-2000), Minister of Defense of Romania (2000-2004), contributing substantially to the admission of Romania into NATO.
Professor Pascu has been an MP in Romania between 1996-2007.
Since 1990, Ioan Mircea Pascu has been a professor of International Relations, dean of the Faculty of International Relations and chair of International Relations at the National University of Political and Administrative Studies.
He is a member of the US Atlantic Council, the International Institute for Strategic Studies, London (since 1993), the consultative committee of the Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces, Geneva (since 2002), the advisory board of the Security and Defense Agenda (since 2012), board and vice-president of the Kangaroo Group (since 2013), of the advisory board of the European Security Round Table (since 2013), the European Leadership Network (2015).
Professor Pascu has also been a member of the academic advisory board to the NATO College, Rome (2006-2008), and of the SACEUR Mentor Group (2006-2009).
